The Artist’s Oracle: Using Tarot to Unblock Creative Flow and Overcome Blocks

Today we’re going to talk about 2 of my passions.  If you’ve found this Substack, you know that tarot is definitely one of them.  But I also really love art.

I’m not a particularly SKILLED artist, but sometimes nothing makes me happier than just trying to make something beautiful, or interesting, or that somehow evokes something deeper than just paint on a canvas or lines in a sketchbook.

But here’s the thing, you can combine the two for brilliant results!

You can draw cards if you’re stuck in the process of creation, and let them lead you to your next discovery.  Or you can keep tarot cards around your creative space that invoke what you’re trying to portray.  You can even build a small altar and place a few cards there to create sacred creative space!

So what are some cards that bring forth the muse?

Ace of Wands:  This is the ultimate creative fire.  This is that flame that we feel in our belly when we want to make something new.  Use the power of the Ace of Wands for starting new, exciting projects!

2 of Wands:  This card is similar to the Ace of Wands, but it comes up more when we’ve started our project and we’re putting things together to see what comes of it.  This goes a little beyond the first idea, and treads the line of the actual execution of our ideas.

3 of Pentacles:  This is a card that we can use when we’re showing our work to others.  This is the card that shows that we’re building our skills and creating something worthy.

8 of Pentacles:  This is a card of mastery.  It comes up when we’ve become really good at our craft.  So if you paint in a certain style, sculpt in a certain material, etc., this shows you mastering that skill.

Knight of Cups:  The Knight of Cups is a romantic.  He’s the poet, the crooner, the actor.  His affections may not be permanent, but he can sweep you off your feet in interesting, creative ways!
