Energy Exercises for Tarot Readers:  Why you sometimes have to just shake it off

If you don’t have a regular meditation practice- you might find that it’s beneficial to your reading.  Meditating techniques like cleansing, centering, grounding, shielding, etc. all help you maintain your equilibrium during readings, which can often be quite emotional or draining otherwise.

Find a quiet place to practice, and sit in a comfortable position.  If you’re in a chair, place your feet flat on the floor.  You can lay down if you want to, but be sure you won’t fall asleep.  Now for the most important part, breathing slowly and rhythmically.

I don’t like counting when I breathe, but I try to inhale slowly through my nose, hold it for a second or two, and then exhale fully through my mouth.  Do this a few times until you feel your mind quiet and your body relax.

Cleansing

As you breathe in, imagine pulling all stuck or stagnant energy from your body.  I start at my head, imagining the energy I want to remove as sticky and dark, like tar.  I breathe in deeply and imagine gathering that energy, pulling it towards my mouth, where I breathe it out into the air.

Once you’ve cleared your mind, you can go to your neck, then your left arm, left torso, left leg (all the way down to your feet), to your right leg, your right torso, and then your right arm.  Once you’ve completed the circuit, take a few moments to really FEEL your body.  See if there are any places you need to revisit, and pull all of that sticky energy out of your body, releasing it into the air to be transformed.

Centering

Once you’ve cleansed, it can be helpful to center.  We’ll use the same rhythm of gathering energy as we breathe in, but this time, we’re gathering the energy from our body and feeling it pull into a ball in our solar plexus.  (This is the point just below the ribs but above the belly.)

I usually feel this energy as a ball of white light, but you can visualize it however you would like.  The important part is that we take all of our scattered energy and bring it to one central point that we can draw from.

Grounding

This is where we interact with the earth on an energetic level.  Once you’ve centered, imagine that energy growing roots that extend down through your bottom or your feet into the floor.  Imagine them snaking down into the earth, where they can send any excess energy down to be recycled, or draw up any necessary energy that is lacking.

Imagine that flow of energy back and forth as you breathe, and when you feel good and balanced, draw those roots back up into your body.

Shielding

This one is similar in that we’ll work with energy in tandem with our deep breathing.  But this time, as you breathe in, you’ll gather energy from your environment to act as a shield.  As you breathe out, imagine constructing a shield that allows any positive, loving energy in, but blocks any negativity that might come to you from other people or the world in general.  As you exhale, imagine that shield as an actual bubble around you.

I envision my shield as a smoky grey, like smoky quartz (known for its shielding properties).  I visualize it as solid, but flexible, where any negativity sent my way just bounces off the surface.

Using these techniques before intense readings can really focus you and help you give the best reading possible.  I find that the shielding, especially, is great when I’m open and receptive during a reading.

You can also use the exercises after a reading if you feel scattered, depleted, or too vulnerable.
